Salisbury umbrella display set to finish

21st September 2018

A temporary art installation of 90 umbrellas ‘floating’ above Salisbury High Street is set to finish this weekend.

Locals, shoppers and tourists have until Sunday (23 September 2018) to enjoy the colourful spectacle.

Suspended in the air since July, the display has provided a dazzling canopy to wow tens of thousands of pedestrians walking beneath.

Salisbury Business Improvement District (BID) organised and invested in the display with supporting partners VisitWiltshire, Salisbury City Council, Salisbury Cathedral and Swindon & Wiltshire LEP.

Kara Rogers, BID Marketing Manager, said: “The brollies have brought a huge bout of positivity and optimism to the city. They’ve become a major talking point and encouraged visitors and locals alike to visit the city centre. They've done exactly what we had hoped.”

The brollies have sheltered ten illuminated doves each carrying a message of hope and peace.

They were inspired by the artist Michael Pendry’s installation Les Colombes, previously on display in Salisbury Cathedral.

Comments, photos and videos of the umbrellas have been circulating on social media with the hashtags #salisburyumbrellas and #poppinschallenge
