Take on the Salisbury Nutcracker Trail

15th November 2018

Families enjoying the Christmas season in Salisbury are being invited to take their children on a magical walking trail.

Ten giant Nutcrackers, each more than 6.5 ft tall and already on display in the foyer of the Odeon Cinema in New Canal, will be positioned around the city centre.

As participants follow the trail, they collect the names of each Nutcracker before posting their completed entry forms at Santa’s Post Office, a specially decorated shopfront in Blue Boar Row close to where the city’s Christmas market and ice rink will be.

A winner, drawn at random in the New Year, will receive a £250 Salisbury Gift Card to spend in over 120 businesses in the city centre.

The Salisbury Nutcracker Trail is an initiative of Salisbury Business Improvement District (BID).

Chief Executive Robin McGowan said: “As well as providing lots of free fun for families to enjoy, we’ve designed the trail to help increase footfall, encourage people to explore places they might not usually go to, and create a talking point.

“The location of Santa’s Post Office, right opposite the Christmas market and ice rink, is ideal as lots of locals and visitors will see it.” According to German folklore, Nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to families and protect homes from evil spirits.

The Odeon foyer display coincides with the release of the new Disney film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

The Salisbury Nutcrackers will be on show at the cinema until they go out into the city to form the trail, running from Thursday, 29th November, 2018 to Sunday, 6th January, 2019.

Trail booklets are available from Salisbury Information Centre or can be downloaded here. Use the hashtag #SalisburyNutcrackerTrail to join in.
