Christmas in Salisbury 2019 highlights

Once again in 2019 Salisbury and our cathedral provide the wondrous backdrop for a series of festive events and activities. Here’s some highlights from Salisbury’s Christmas calendar.

Salisbury Christmas Lights Switch On

The start of Christmas in Salisbury 2019! On Thursday 21st November 2019 from 6pm, thousands of visitors will gather in Salisbury’s Market Place to enjoy a festive evening of fireworks, entertainment and live music, plus Father Christmas will be making a guest appearance. Salisbury Ice Rink

From Saturday 30th November 2019 until Sunday 5th January 2020, Salisbury’s picturesque Guildhall Square will see the return of the festive ice rink.

The ice rink is a wonderful addition to the city at Christmas and is the perfect opportunity for families, friends, colleagues, schools and community groups to come together to experience and enjoy the festive spirit.

The ice rink, once again, will be protected from the Great British winter weather by a marquee, making it the perfect Christmas activity come rain or shine. Tickets go on sale soon, and an early-bird discount will be available. For further information click here.

Salisbury Christmas Fayre

Authentic German-style wooden chalets in Salisbury Market Place will be home to traders from across the country selling their finest products. The fayre will open on Saturday 30th November until Tuesday 24th December.

From traditional festive foods to hand-crafted gifts, the fayre will be a chance to experience unique Christmas shopping.

Whilst listening to the programme of live music and enjoying festive treats in the food and drink quarter, the fayre will provide a vibrant and atmospheric place to sit back and relax.

Santa’s Grotto

A magical Santa’s Grotto will be transforming The Crown Court inside The Guildhall. Delight your children as they enter the Grotto and enjoy a story read by Salisbury’s very own Santa. The Snowman with Live Orchestra at Salisbury Cathedral

Immerse yourself in the irresistible animated film of The Snowman accompanied by a live orchestra in the atmospheric setting of Salisbury Cathedral on Friday 6th December.

A heart-warming experience that brings more than a snowman to life – and featuring the much-loved classic ‘Walking in the Air’ – it’s a festive favourite for the whole family. For further information and to book click here.

The Family Pantomime Robin Hood at Salisbury Playhouse

With all the elements of a traditional pantomime – comedy, dance, audience participation, fantastic sets and familiar songs – this year’s Robin Hood is not to be missed.

Performed in the Main House at Salisbury Playhouse from 30th November 2019 until 12th January 2020, pantomime is the perfect festive treat for all the family.

Ticket sales for last year’s production of Beauty & the Beast were record-breaking, so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder at Salisbury Arts Centre

Put your detective skills to the test in an evening of Christmas mischief and mayhem. This murder mystery with a three-course meal is perfect for Christmas parties or a fun night out with family and friends.

Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas’s Church

The Christmas Tree Festival is an annual tradition in St Thomas’s Church. Schools, businesses, community groups and individuals take the opportunity to convey their message of Christmas through the decoration of a Christmas tree.

The variety of imaginative and artistic entries is magical and heart-warming - an experience not to be missed. The Christmas tree entries can be admired from Tuesday 3rd - Sunday 8th December 2019.

Salisbury Nutcracker Trail (Kindly sponsored by Salisbury Reds)

According to German traditions, Nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and to protect your home. Ten giant Nutcrackers are coming to Salisbury to provide a fun festive trail for all the family.

Take part in the trail from Saturday 30th November 2019 until Sunday 5th January 2020. Find all ten Nutcrackers and be in with a chance of winning a £100 Salisbury Gift Card.

Salisbury Indies Late Night Shopping Event

Salisbury’s independent shops will be opening their doors until 8pm on Thursday 5th December 2019. Shops will be offering exclusive offers and discounts – you may even find some shops offering a glass of mulled wine and mince pie whilst you browse.

This late-night shopping evening will provide a chance to do some Christmas shopping from Salisbury’s independent shops after work.
