Workshops are being held to give people the opportunity to learn how to make traditional willow and tissue paper lanterns, ahead of the annual Lantern & Lights Procession in Salisbury.
Returning for the 8th year, the Lantern & Lights Procession will take place on the evening of Thursday 12th December 2019.
Salisbury BID and Salisbury City Council are working in partnership to bring the festive event to the city once again this year.
And Openreach, the UK’s largest broadband network provider, and the sponsor of the 2019 Lantern & Lights Procession, has upped the ante for all those taking part, by offering a prize for the best entry.
James Tappenden, Fibre First Director at Openreach, said: “Our engineers are out in Salisbury every day working hard to build a network that will deliver broadband at the speed of light. So, of course it was a lightbulb moment when we offered to sponsor the Lantern & Lights Procession.
“I can’t wait to see all the brilliant entries and look forward to awarding the best one with our prize of a tech bundle worth £500.”
Hosted by Wiltshire Creative, the drop-in lantern making workshops are free for everyone to attend and all materials are provided.
• Saturday 9th November: 10am – 3pm at Salisbury Arts Centre
• Saturday 30th November: 10am – 3pm at Salisbury Guildhall
Starting at Salisbury Cathedral and finishing in the Market Place, last year’s procession saw hundreds of lanterns and thousands of people light up the city. This year’s procession promises to be even bigger and better than last year, with a marching band and ample of family entertainment.
To protect the environment and to prevent danger to wildlife, lanterns and lights joining the illuminated procession will be battery powered. Naked flames are not permitted, and no lanterns will be released into the sky.
Families, schools, community groups and businesses are all encouraged to come and get involved – bring your lanterns, torches or lights and help light up Salisbury.
Whether you join the procession or just come to enjoy the colourful spectacle; this is a truly magical evening for the whole family.
In partnership with VisitWiltshire, Salisbury BID co-fund the Visit Salisbury website to promote the city to visitors. The Visit Salisbury website has a full events calendar for Salisbury.
