The BID’s updated position on People Friendly Salisbury scheme

16th November 2020

Businesses in Salisbury have raised their concerns with Salisbury BID about the short term impact the People Friendly Salisbury scheme is having or may have once the national COVID restrictions are lifted and the vital Christmas trading period can begin.

Therefore, we asked our BID business members for their current feedback through a survey, with the understanding that the scheme had only been in place a short time before the national lockdown was announced.

The initial feedback provided from over 75 businesses in the city centre has allowed the BID Board to update the BID's position on the People Friendly Salisbury scheme.

71% of those businesses who completed the survey asked the BID to ask Wiltshire Council to lift the scheme until the New Year.

As the voice for city centre businesses, Salisbury BID is listening to and representing our members and therefore the BID Board has written to Wiltshire Council asking them to temporarily suspend the People Friendly Scheme, and suggesting a reintroduction of the scheme in the New Year.

This suspension will allow Wiltshire Council to review and address some of the challenges and concerns raised to date regarding the scheme.

Whilst Salisbury BID supports the longer term ambitions of the scheme, there are many pressing challenges facing businesses at this time and we need to do all we can to enable a positive trading environment in the run up to Christmas.
